The Wine
Like the Loire Valley and New Zealand, South Africa too makes delicious and memorable Sauvignons, and Farmhouse is a lovely example. With its textbook passion fruit and green bell pepper character, this mouthfilling white goes beautifully with milder Cape Malay curries and barbecued seafood. It is made by the hugely impressive Spier winery (former IWSC ‘South African Wine Producer of the Year’ no less). Founded near Stellenbosch in 1692, this historic cellar even pre-dates most of the great châteaux of Bordeaux! Today it attracts thousands of tourists not only for its rich wine heritage, but because within the property there is now a hotel, restaurant and cheetah reserve. Serve this classic Sauvignon well chilled in large glasses.
