The Wine
The original Richard Hamilton founded his vineyard in 1837 just south of Adelaide. Six generations later, Leconfield have a constant 5-Star Halliday rating with many top-scoring wines, winning Trophies and Golds galore. Their Coonawarra Cabernet was made ‘Best Australian Cabernet’ by Decanter, too. The current Richard Hamilton took over from his uncle, brought together the family’s McLaren Vale and Coonawarra estates, and employed the renowned Paul Gordon as winemaker. Centurion Shiraz is made from the fruit of 124 year old vines, so bunches are very small and sparse, but the concentration is terrific. Aged in 40% new French oak for 16 months, this red is a powerhouse of rich dark fruit and many layers of complexity. Tops with duck or lamb.
