The Wine
Boasting raspberry fruit and a silky smooth, rounded style, Rainha do Mar is from Portugal’s Setúbal Peninsula, from where, centuries ago, Vasco da Gama set sail to discover a sea route to India. The region’s plentiful sunshine and cooling coastal breezes are ideal for many red grapes and produce wines that are beautifully balanced with excellent ripeness and depth. That’s especially true of Castelão, one of Portugal’s most appealing and richly fruity native varieties. Rainha do Mar (which means, incidentally, ‘Queen of the Sea’) proves the point. Carefully crafted by the highly rated Jaime Quendera, this red’s delicious ripe flavours are ideal with rich pasta dishes, all sorts of roasted meats or skewered vegetable, fish or meat kebabs.
