The Wine
Alvaro Palacios made his name revolutionising wine quality in Priorat. Then, with his nephew Ricardo Pérez, he established Descendientes de J. Palacios in Bierzo in 1997. In 2015 Alvaro was crowned Decanter ‘Man of the Year’ and is credited with having “helped to rescue both Priorat and Bierzo from oblivion” (Decanter). Moncerbal is made from the grapes of old Mencia vines grown in soils of slate, quartz and marble on steep hillsides where the influence of the nearby Atlantic creates special growing conditions. The pair farm biodynamically and take rigorous selection procedures to an extreme to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Very intense and youthful, this wine benefits from two hours in a decanter. Best with hearty game dishes.
