Cabernet Sauvignon is big news in Spain, with many top Rioja houses experimenting with this much loved noble variety. Here’s a great value example from Javier Murúa, ripened beautifully in the sunny vineyards of Castilla. Ripe, crunchy cassis fruit.

The Wine
We first met Julián Murúa and his son Javier at their family estate in Rioja years ago, and were delighted with the quality we found there. Naturally, when they told us they also made wines at a modern cellar in La Mancha, we were keen to investigate. This vast, chalky plain in central Spain has very reliable sunshine and we soon realised we had hit gold as we tasted through a range of wonderfully fresh and fruity modern wines. Fast forward to today and this latest offering, a pure Cabernet Sauvignon bottled unoaked to retain all its attractive, fruity character. Although instantly approachable, it tastes even better if poured into a jug an hour prior to serving. Enjoy with spicy Spanish meatballs, lamb casserole or just on its own.
