The Wine
For velvety, ripe Rhône Villages reds, head for the Plan de Dieu vineyards in the south. The area is strewn with the same large pebbles that you’ll find in Châteauneuf du Pape, which help to achieve super ripeness. The appellation isn’t well known, yet it produces some of the most attractive, warm fruited (and affordable) wines you’re likely to find anywhere. This one is from a small estate founded in 2002 by Damien Rozier. He dipped his toe in with just 2.5 hectares, gained a medal with his first vintage, and now has 35 hectares and a small cellar. Using classic native varieties – namely Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre – all aged in oak barriques, this is a voluptuous Rhône red. Supple enough to enjoy solo or with a hearty casserole.
