The Wine
The Plan de Dieu vineyards were established by religious communities in the Middle Ages, under the protectorship of the legendary Knights Templar. The area is strewn with the same large pebbles that you’ll find in Châteauneuf du Pape, and produces some of the most stunning (and affordable) wines you’re likely to find anywhere. This one is from a small estate that’s been in the Martin family for over a century. Julien Martin bought the original five hectares of vineyards and his son, Jules, later expanded the property and built a winery. Today the estate is run by David and Eric Martin, great grandsons of the founder. A full flavoured red with rich fruit, the 2013 works really well with spicy sausages, lamb chops and hearty casseroles.

"A superb wine which drinks like a £20 bottle for less than half the price"
