The 300 metres altitude of Marlborough’s Upper Awatere Valley emphasises Sauvignon’s freshness and concentration. It’s what makes this wine – a Gold medal winner in 2014 – a cut above the rest. Look for complex aromas from gooseberry to tomato leaf.

The Wine
With so much Kiwi Sauvignon to choose from, it’s refreshing to encounter one that really marks itself out. This has so much intensity, elegance and depth. The estate is the creation of Peter and Jane Clark, a soldier and nurse who decided to go into wine. In 1998 they bought 8 hectares in premium Upper Awatere Valley and started from scratch, planting 22,000 vines. Despite major setbacks, including devastating frost (a hazard this high), they persevered, luckily for wine lovers. In 2003 they were joined by son Simon, who has worked vintages at Australia’s renowned Yalumba and the outstanding Dr Loosen in Germany. Today the family can boast of being established masters of their craft, which you’ll taste in their brilliant, leafy fresh 2016.
