Top tip for claret fans: this beauty from “the leading estate in Côtes de Castillon" (Decanter) is for all intents and purposes identical, bar the price, to a St-Emilion. Being Tony Laithwaite’s original flagship wine, there’s been no expense spared.

The Wine
An award-winning, Merlot-rich classic, from estate-grown grapes and aged in premium new French oak barrels. ‘Right bank’ (Saint-Emilion-style) claret doesn’t get much better than this unless you spend several times the price. You see, not only is La Clarière Laithwaite among the region’s best estates, the Castillon terroir is a continuation of Saint-Emilion’s famous côtes. As Wine International explained “if it wasn't for the (political) line dividing Castillon from Saint-Emilion, its wines would be twice the price. The hills are the same, the soil is the same, the exposure is the same". The 2008 is a lovely, classic vintage; rich, ripe and smooth with an abundance of plum and tobacco character. Decant and serve with rare roast beef.
