The Wine
The Laithwaites first bought a vineyard in Castillon’s Sainte Colombe village in 1980. They needed a house to stay in, so a decade later they purchased Château du Bourg, which they then discovered included some of the oldest buildings (in particular, le presbytère) in the village, and vineyards recorded as a century old. What treasure! The estate had been neglected by its former owner, Monsieur Barthoumeyroux, a travelling fish salesman, but the Laithwaites have gradually restored the buildings and the ancient vineyards. As you’d expect, most of the vines are Merlot, as this grows best in the clay dominated soils, supported by a little of both Cabernets. Ageing for a year in oak barriques adds to the complexity of this pretty, silky claret.
