Long standing customers will remember Michael Fragos when he was winemaker at Tatachilla. He moved to Chapel Hill, seduced by the distant views of the ocean (he’s a keen surfer) and the chance to make stunners like this rich, lees aged Chardonnay.

The Wine
This contemporary Aussie Chardonnay is a joy – as elegant as white Burgundy yet distinctly ripe and crisp. It’s from the Kangarilla vineyard at the foot of the cool Mount Lofty Ranges, hence its freshness. The vines were planted by Professor Tom Nelson in 1973 around a dilapidated stone chapel that he renovated and within which he began making wine. It remained in use until replaced in 1994 by a new 80,000 case winery. In charge today is Michael Fragos, a McLaren Vale wine evangelist of 20 years standing. Part fermented in older oak, part in vat and part with wild yeasts, all lees aged, this is a luscious, subtle and complex, handcrafted white. It displays creamy white peach and a satisfying roundness. Serve gently chilled with chicken.
