The Wine
Ascención comes from Argentina’s oldest estate, Colomé, in Salta, where vineyards rising up to 3,000 metres produce fruit of mesmerising quality. While alluding to the vineyards’ dizzying altitudes, Ascención is also the name of the original founder’s daughter. This trail blazing cellar spares no expense in the vineyard or the cellar, so it’s no surprise its finest Malbec is often rated over 90/100 by influential critic Robert Parker. Winemaker Thibaut Delmotte combined premium Malbec from 35 year old vines with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Tannat, and aged the wine in French and American oak. Intense purple red with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrants and spice, it’s ideal with rare roast beef, T-bone steaks and strong cheeses.
