The Wine
Artisan is a small, historic, family winery owned by Rex and Maria Sunde in the Oratia Valley of west Auckland, in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. The family planted their first vines in the valley in 1906. The environment is of paramount importance to the Sundes. They see themselves as caretakers of the land with a duty to pass it on in a better condition than they found it. To that end they farm organically, as do all their contract growers. The 2016 Artisan Daffodil Farm Sauvignon is classic, gooseberry scented Marlborough though with perhaps even more purity and freshness of flavour than usual. Rex and Maria enjoy this wine under their pergola with New Zealand green-lipped mussels or spicy chicken wings – free range of course!
